Major Islands by Area
There are 6,535 islands over 500 square meters in China, with a total area of 37,000 square kilometers. The coastline of the islands is 13,217.8 kilometers in total, of which 450 are inhabited by residents. There are mainly four types of mainland islands, alluvial islands, volcanic islands and coral islands.
1: Taiwan island
The area of Taiwan Island is about 36,000 square kilometers, ranking 38th (or 39th) in the current global ranking of islands. About 70% of the island's terrain is mountainous and hilly. The flat principle is mainly concentrated on the western coast. The terrain changes greatly in elevation, and the highest point is 3952 meters. Taiwan is a mainland island formed by plate collision and uplift.
2: Hainan Island
Hainan Island is an island located in the northwest of the South China Sea, one of the continental margin seas in the western Pacific Ocean. It faces the Leizhou Peninsula across the Qiongzhou Strait in the north. It is called Qiongzhou, Qiongya, etc. in ancient times or is still used today. The island has a land area of about 33,210 square kilometers and is geologically a mainland island. It is the largest island in the South China Sea.
3: Chongming Island
Chongming Island is a National Geopark of China. The park covers the entire Chongming Island. It is about 76 kilometers long from east to west, 13 to 18 kilometers wide from north to south, and covers an area of about 1,200 square kilometers. Chongming Island is known as "the gateway to the Yangtze River and Yingzhou in the East China Sea". The island is surrounded by rivers on three sides, the sea on one side, the East China Sea on the east, Pudong New Area, Baoshan District, and Taicang in Jiangsu Province across the water in the south, and the Yangtze River in the west and north, Haimen and Qidong in Jiangsu Province by a strip of water.
4: Zhoushan Island
Zhoushan Island is located in the southeast of Hangzhou Bay of the People's Republic of China and in the northeastern waters of Zhejiang Province. At the time of the first island survey, the area was 476.1653 square kilometers. It was the main island of the Zhoushan Islands and the largest island in Zhejiang Province. It faces Ningbo City in the south. Due to the development of the Donggang sea flat and the recent reclamation projects such as Diaobang and Diaoliang, Lianghengshan and other islands are connected to the land, and the current actual area is 502.65 square kilometers.
5: Haitan Island
Haitan Island, also known as Pingtan Island, is located in Fuzhou City, Fujian Province, and belongs to the Pingtan Comprehensive Experimental Zone in Pingtan County of the city. The island is an island off the east coast of the Asian continent in Pingtan County, Fuzhou City, Fujian Province, China. It is located south of the mouth of the Minjiang River and is the largest island in Fujian Province. The area is 370.9 square kilometers. The sea area is 6,064 square kilometers, and the coastline is 408 kilometers long. Known as "Thousand Reef Island County". It is separated from Fuqing City by the Haitan Strait.
6: Dongshan Island
Dongshan County is located in the southern part of Fujian Province, near latitude 23 degrees 42 minutes north and longitude 117 degrees 25 minutes east. The east is the Taiwan Strait, the west is Zhao'an County, the northwest is Yunxiao County, and the northeast is Zhangpu County; the area is 247 square kilometers. Dongshan Island is composed of the main island and the surrounding 67 small islands. The main island covers an area of 194 square kilometers. It was originally connected to the mainland. After the crustal rupture fell, it was separated from the mainland. It is the second largest island in Fujian Province. The total length of the island's coastline is 141.3 kilometers. In 1961, the Bachimen seawall was built to connect with the land and become a peninsula. In 2014, the Bachimen seawall was dismantled and restored to the whole island.
7: Changxing Island
Changxing Island is an alluvial island located at the mouth of the Yangtze River in China. It covers an area of 88 square kilometers and has a local population of about 36,000. The whole island is the administrative area of Changxing Town, Chongming District, Shanghai. Changxing Island surfaced and was first formed in the seventeenth year of Chongzhen in Ming Dynasty (1644).
8: Lantau Island
With a total area of 146.75 square kilometers, Lantau Island is the largest island in Hong Kong. It is located in the southwest of Hong Kong and at the mouth of the Pearl River Delta. The second and third highest mountains in Hong Kong on Lantau Island are Phoenix Mountain (934 meters) and Tai Tung Shan (869 meters). The main bays on Lantau Island are Tung Chung Bay, Yin O Bay, Tai Pak Bay, Silver Mine Bay, Pui O Bay, Chi Ma Wan, Shui Hau Bay, Shunliu Dongwan and Shunliu Sai Wan. Geologically, the rocks of Lantau are mainly igneous rocks, and there are many granites in the east of Lantau. Quartz monzonites are found in Tong Fuk, Mui Wo, Pui O and other places in southern Lantau.
9: Shangchuan Island
Shangchuan Island (Portuguese: Ilha Sanchoão or Ilha São João, meaning "Saint John's Island") is located off the coast of Taishan City, Jiangmen City, Guangdong Province. It is part of Chuandao Town, with a coastline of 139.87 kilometers and a total area of 137.3 square kilometers. The face is Xiachuan Island. The famous Western missionary St. Francis Xavier died on the island.
10: Xiamen Island
Xiamen Island, also known as Lu Island, was originally called "Jiahe Island". Xiamen, originally refers to the "Xiamen City" in the southwest of the island. The island is the largest island in Xiamen. Located in the southeastern end of Fujian Province, China, adjacent to Da and Xiao Jinmen Island, it covers an area of about 132.5 square kilometers, 13.7 kilometers long from north to south, and 12.5 kilometers wide from east to west. There are two administrative districts, Siming District and Huli District, Xiamen. With a population of more than one million, the island is also the 49th most populated island in the world.
